ODC SharePoint Application Development with Agile Methodology
The client was a medium sized import and export business company based in California, who does business across the whole world. The client wanted to develop a completely new application to meet their special business requirements. Because the client has their business in many countries, so the portal should allow users to share files, news, or other information. The portal should provide different account types, for example, administrators, customers, organizations, VIPs, visitors, etc., different types of user account should have different authorizations to access database. The administrator should be in charge of the whole portal management. Users can upload, update and share business information via this portal to operate their business more efficient.
The SharePoint was the most suitable technology to develop this portal. SharePoint was developed by Microsoft as a family of software products for collaboration, file sharing and web publishing. The family of products includes: Microsoft SharePoint Server, Microsoft SharePoint Foundation, Microsoft Search Server, Microsoft SharePoint Designer and Microsoft SharePoint Workspace.
Considering the cost of portal development, the client decided to set up an ODC (Offshore Development Center) development team of three engineers on our site. Although the portal was developed on our site, the client felt there was no distance between them and our team, our ODC team worked closely with the client. The project manager kept in touch with client almost every day to discuss and verify functionalities or requirements. Our ODC team sent weekly report and monthly report to our client so that the client knew the progress of the offshore portal project. We chose Agile as the software development methodology in this portal development project. Agile software development methodology is the one for the creative process that anticipates the need for flexibility and applies a level of pragmatism into the delivery of the finished product. Agile methodology focuses on keeping code simple, testing often, and delivering functional bits of the application as soon as they’re ready. With Agile methodology, our ODC team received feedback frequently to promote portal development project more efficiently and the portal project was developed and delivered very successfully.
