Portal

Portal is a website which integrates various content services. In this meaning, it usually contains 3 different portals.

Enterprise portal, also regarded as Enterprise Information Portal, is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across organizational boundaries. It is designed to collect and personalize information through application-specific portlets as a web-based user interface, and always keeps the information updated.

Intranet portal is the gateway that unifies access to all enterprise information and applications on an intranet. This tool helps company easily manage its data, applications, and information. For enterprise user, it is the same as enterprise portal.

Web portal is a collection of large numbers of links presenting diverse information from other sources. It offers services such as e-mail, news, entertainment rather than what search engine offers. Web portals provide a way for enterprises to provide a consistent look and feel with access control and procedures for multiple applications and databases, which otherwise would have been different entities altogether.

Portal should show not only enterprise-class content, but also enterprise-class applications. For a company, portal is not only a tool to publish some news. Processing businesses for both customers and staff is much more important.
